Angel Loves Indies… Llerena

Llerena Restaurant, 167 Upper Street, N1 1US

Restaurateur Alberto Torres Sosa comes from a long line of Spanish farmers and producers dedicated to sharing the best of Spanish fare with the world. Take a bite of our chat with this tapas trailblazer.

Hi Alberto, please tell us a bit about your background.

I am originally from Spain and came to London for the experience and to learn about different cultures. Our family has food businesses in Spain – three generations dedicated to the farming and production of Iberico pork. Opening a restaurant was the way to share all those delicious products created in my family for generations.

Tell us about Llerena Restaurant.

Llerena is a tapas restaurant with some dishes strongly attached to the Extremadura region. We started five years ago as a way to bring the products from Spain to London, the capital of the world. It is also a way to internationalise our business.

What are your main challenges?

Our supplier has increased the price of all their products. It is really difficult to pass those costs on to our customers.

Who is your typical customer?

Local residents, from their late twenties up to their forties.

Why is food your passion?

It is a way of gathering with friends and family, enjoying life with them.

For people new to Spanish tapas, what would you recommend choosing from the Llerena menu?

Iberico ham and paellas.

What makes your business unique?

We have really good quality products and good prices. We offer a casual and friendly service that makes you feel at home.

What does the future hold for Llerena Restaurant?

We would like to open a new restaurant.

What do you have going on at the restaurant?

Saturdays and Sundays we have slow-cooked seafood paella served from 12pm to 5pm, and Sundays we have flamenco guitar music in the evening.

What is it like working in the Angel? What do you enjoy about the area?

It is really nice. What I appreciate most in the people is they are really friendly and always willing to help.

Please share something people might not know about you?

I was a French horn player from seven years old until 25.

And finally, what is your…
Favourite tipple?
Glass of red wine or a caña cerveza.
Go-to snack? Olives.
Perfect Sunday? On a sunny day, a morning run, lunch with friends, and siesta.
Three foodstuffs you’d take to a desert island? Iberico ham, wine, and bread.
