The Board

Our board reflects the wide variety of business sectors and sizes at the Angel. Members give their time and skills for free. We hold regular meetings to develop policy, provide strategic direction and support, agree budgets, plus performance monitoring and corporate governance. We always welcome applications from any business interested in joining our board.

    Chairman

    Our chairman, Robert Coyle, founding partner of solicitors Colman Coyle

    Robert started his solicitors’ practice in Camden Passage in 1984 and is still at the heart of the Angel with Upper Street offices now overlooking Islington Green. A local resident and Arsenal season ticket holder, Islington is a big part of his life, and he would like to help improve things if he can.

    Company Secretary, Owner of Frederick’s restaurant

    Family business Frederick’s was started in 1969 by Nick’s father Lou and has been serving food and drink to the people of the Angel for over 40 years. Nick trained as a chartered accountant, has a variety of other business interests, and has been an active member of our business improvement district since it began.

    Louise is the Managing Partner of Bolt Burdon Solicitors, located in the heart of Upper Street and whose clients include local businesses and residents. She has both lived and worked in Islington since 2008, so making Angel the best place possible to live and work is something that she is passionate about.

    Grant has led and managed education and training programmes within Islington for 14 years in one of London’s most renowned colleges.     David first came to Islington over 40 years ago. Having trained as a modernist architect with James Stirling and Colin St.John Wilson, he now has a reputation as a conservation architect. David believes that good architecture in ordinary circumstances improves the world. David has been involved in many local organisations making sure the environment is both preserved and improved to better the quality of people’s lives.

    Islington Councillor St Peter’s Ward

    Martin has been an Islington councillor since 2006. He works for a local architectural practice, has a good understanding of the built environment and planning issues, and is chair of a planning committee. He is keen to maintain links between different sectors of the community. He sees the BID Board as a means to develop links between local businesses and the residential community in terms of employment, amenity and security, and is keen to support the board in its work to improve the Angel.

    Britannia has been working as a senior leader in the cultural sector for the last 15 years, managing visitor experience and operations. Since its founding in 1683, world-famous Sadler’s Wells has been contributing to the thriving cultural and economic life of Islington and today continues to promote the public’s understanding and enjoyment of dance within the local community as well as on the international stage.

    Eric Sorensen has lived nearby for many years. He has much experience in regeneration and promoting development, especially in Docklands and East London. His is a board member of the Mayor of London's Development Corporation at Park Royal, and chairs the Angel Association.

    Laura has 15 years’ of property management experience. She currently heads the award-winning developer’s in-house property management team, looking after £4.2bn of central London assets, while also championing customer service to improve how they do business.

    Director of Savills

    Paul has worked in the property world exclusively in Islington since 1986 and has intimate and extensive knowledge of the market and the local trading environment. He was managing director of Holden Matthews when it successfully merged with international property company Savills in 2005 and now, as a director of Savills, he is responsible for the Islington area along with the east and north of London. He is a member of the Islington business board, and is associated with both the Almeida and The Park theatres.
